Stargazing LIVE

On Monday 16th Febuary a show called stargazing live aired on BBC2 for 3 nights. The show was presented by Professor Brian Cox and comedian Dara O’Briain. During the shows three days they covered the topic of Black Holes, Alien Life and Planets.

On the first night they talked about stars and how to find stars and launched their scheme about finding a new planet by looking for dips in light which will be a sign that a planet is passing a distant star. They also told the viewers about how they can start stargazing and where to look if people wish to see Jupiter and other star cancellations with the help of Mark Thompson and Liz Bonnin.

After day 1′s spectacular results for both the BBC and the viewers who saw millions of the stars day 2 hit the topic of Black Holes. As Well as black holes they scratched the surface of a big event they had set up to turn a whole Town’s lights of to stop light pollution for a whole night to help the star gazers. As in Night 1 they told people what they could see in the nights sky and where to look if you wish to see the  wondersof the universe.

Night three hit the topic of Alien life. As well as all the useful information about the possibilities of alien life Bian and Dara revealed the results from all the people who had looked for another planet. They revealed the astounding results that two people had found a new planet. They also search for sounds on a planet in a separate solar system, unfortunately there were no signs of Alien life. As well as looking for aliens they turned a whole Town’s lights off to help stargazers in the area but it was too cloudy to see any of the nights sky.

The show had such a hit on people that telescope sales raised by 500%. Many people enjoyed the show and are hoping that there will be another series soon!

Year 9 Trenches Trip 2011

In May, Year 9 students travelled to Belgium to learn more about the history of the First World War and to visit several cemeteries in order to pay their respects.

Names, Names, Names.

Names, Names, Names.

The students also visited Bell’s Redoubt, the place where Donald Bell, a former student of Harrogate Grammar School, died attempting to take a German trench. Donald Bell earned the Victoria Cross for his bravery, and is the only professional footballer ever to earn the VC.

U15 Rugby Team

The U15 rugby team has had an excellent season this year, of the 17 teams they have played they have won 11 matches. 2 of these matches were in the Yorkshire Cup in which they are currently undefeated. The teams captain is Alistair Cameron Jones and the vice captain is David Rowbotham. At the moment they are playing in the Daily Mail Vase in which they have lost 1 game and won 6, they are now in the country’s final 16 teams with another match on Friday 20th of January at HGS which will be playing for a spot in the top 8. It is an all or nothing game with a victory bringing them one step closer to Twickenham and a loss knocking them out of the competition. Mr Mackay commented on their chances saying that “Their chances are good but they must avoid complacency, they’ve played us before and know how we play, there is fierce competition for places” The game will be against Driffield who they have beaten once already. Commenting on the team Mr Mackay has stated that the team has an “Excellent team spirit.”

On the team there are several highly accomplished players such as Scott Irvine and David Rowbotham who play for the Yorkshire U15′s. Alistair Cameron Jones, Tom Mitchell and Sam Mitchell play for the North Yorkshire U15′s.

If you are interested and able watch the match on Friday at 2pm then you should go and support our team as they play against Driffield.
